New Printing Presses

08/11/2007

The £60 million Johnston Press print facility at Dinnington in South Yorkshire went live on 4 shift production in September 2006 and since then has gone from strength to strength.  In addition a £50 million investment at Portsmouth went into production in September 2007.

The Dinnington site is located on the site of a former coal mine, and with its cutting edge technology in CTP, Presshall and Mailroom, means that the site is now producing 95 newspaper titles and in excess of 6.5million newspapers per week.  It will process over 65,000 tonnes of newsprint in 2007.  The range of titles produced reflects the flexibility and versatility of the operation.

The press is a MAN Roland XXL which has 12 print units and 3 folders.  The press is capable of running at 85,000 copies per hour and each print unit is capable of 24 pages of full colour at top speed, or 48 pages of full colour at half speed.  It also has the facility to stitch multiple sections on the fun and produce high quality consistent print.

The Muller Martini Mailroom includes an on-line trimmer and a disking inserting system that allows us to insert up to 7 inserts per product and meet all the mailroom requirements of our customers.

The site has been designed to minimize our impact on the environment - the vast majority of the newsprint used on site is recycled paper and supplied on carbon composite cores that can be re-used.  Recovery systems ensure that the solvent used in the print process is recylced and a building management system ensures our use of power is minimised.

The investment in technology, modern manufacturing processes and ideology means tha the site is ideally positioned to cater for all types of newspaper production in the modern media world.
